Covid Delta Is Sweeping States That Cut Back Health Authorities' Powers

The locales restricting health authorities powers to address the pandemic are largely southern or rural western states with Republican governors whose interest is in firing up a political base which believes Covid is partly to blame for the 2020 election result they dont like.

They are pursuing these policies rather than public health even as the Covid Delta variant is now ravaging their populations. The question is whether growing infections and deaths will cause a change in attitude among the right wing political class. JL

Alice Ollstein and Dan Goldberg report in Politico:

In Texas, where Covid hospitalizations are up 30% and deaths up 10% over the past week, Gov. Abbott barred counties, cities and school districts from requiring masks. Montana did the same for vaccine and mask mandates, letting local officials overrule health department orders. And Florida Gov. DeSantis, whose state accounts for one in five of new U.S. infections, asserted power to nix local health orders if he concludes they infringe on individual rights. Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, South Carolina and Utah have also enacted laws limiting local authority over Covid responseThe Delta strain of the coronavirus is racing across the country, driving a surge of new cases and hospitalizations. But local and state officials this time have fewer options to slow the spread.
In Texas, where Covid hospitalizations are up 30 percent and deaths up 10 percent over the past week, Gov. Greg Abbott recently barred counties, cities and school districts from requiring masks. Montana did the same for vaccine and mask mandates, while letting local officials overrule health department orders. And Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose state accounts for one in five of new U.S. infections, asserted power to nix local health orders if he concludes they infringe on individual rights.
