Ukrainians Remaining In Kursk Defeat Repeat Russian Efforts To Take New Defenses

Ukraine retains approximately 100 square miles of Russian territory in Kursk oblast. That is considerably more than many in the western media appear willing to acknowledge.

The Russians are desperate to recapture the entire salient because Putin does not want it used as a bargaining chip against him. But the Russians have insufficient forces, even after redeploying units from Pokrovsk and Toretsk, so have been unable to accomplish their objective. This is not unique to the Kursk sector and has been a characteristic failing of the Russian military since the invasion. JL

Militarnyi reports:

Ukraine’s 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade destroyed 14 Russian military vehicles including  tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and trucks in Russia’s Kursk region. The vehicles were part of a planned Russian assault force targeting Ukrainian positions. Ukrainian defenders used FPV drones and reconnaissance systems to locate and strike the Russian armor. Despite Russian efforts to equip vehicles with anti-drone defenses, these systems do not always provide effective protection. Russian forces are regrouping to push Ukrainian troops back from their newly secured positions after withdrawing from Sudzha but have been unable to concentrate (sufficient) combat power in the area

Operators from the Strix unmanned systems battalion of Ukraine’s 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade have destroyed 14 Russian military vehicles in Russia’s Kursk region.

The brigade’s press service shared the video of their work on Telegram.

The enemy used destroyed vehicles that were reportedly part of a planned Russian assault force targeting Ukrainian positions in the area.

Instead, the brigade’s drone operators successfully targeted the enemy’s tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and logistics trucks.

Russian forces are currently regrouping to push Ukrainian troops back from newly secured positions after withdrawing from the city of Sudzha. However, they have been unable to concentrate significant combat power in the area, the statement reads.

Ukrainian defenders use FPV drones and reconnaissance systems to locate and strike Russian armor. Despite Russian efforts to equip vehicles with anti-drone defenses, these systems do not always provide effective protection.

“Reconnaissance, target detection, rapid approach, acceleration, impact—the explosive tears the invaders to pieces,” the Strix battalion stated.

This is not the first time the 47th Brigade has repelled large Russian assault groups in the Kursk region. In early March, the Magura 47th separate mechanized brigade’s units fought off two waves of Russian attacks.

The first assault included three tanks and two armored personnel carriers, which were detected and destroyed.

In the second wave, Russia deployed two additional tanks, which failed to assist the Russian assault units and were also eliminated along with troops.

Militranyi also reported that the 14th Separate Regiment of Unmanned Systems recently identified and helped target three North Korean-made M1989 Koksan self-propelled guns in the Kursk region.

A drone spotted the artillery positions in the region’s territory, and the fire was directed using M142 HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, striking the targets with high-explosive and cluster munitions.
