Cases of COVID-19 in Florida have more than doubled over the past week. The total number of cases increased by 170,269 cases, an increase of over 130 percent from the week prior. New case positivity rates also increased from 13.9 percent to a total of 26.5 percent. Vaccinations have dropped over the same period. The latest data from the Florida Department of Health show the state experienced 298,455 new cases during the week beginning on Christmas Eve.

Florida now has a total of 4.2 million cases statewide, include 62,480 deaths.
The huge spike in cases corresponds with the Christmas and New Year's holidays as well as the rise of the omicron variant.
