Man Accused of Driving Stoned Takes Selfie With Arresting Officer

Dude's gonna be able to sell that one on eBay - once he resolves his issues with the criminal justice system. JL

David Kravets reports in ars technica:

"Defendant requested to take a SnapChat selfie with me to which I happily obliged."
Maybe it was the marijuana speaking in a slow voice, telling a 20-year Iowa man to take a selfie with the police officer who was arresting him for allegedly driving while being stoned.
Or maybe Gilbert Phelps wasn't thinking at all when he asked his accuser, Officer Ben Hektoen, if he could take a selfie with him. The officer "happily obliged." The arrested man snapped away and immediately uploaded his masterpiece to SnapChat.

That's all according to an Iowa City Police Department report Hektoen wrote describing Phelps' arrest. The Smoking Gun published the report and photo of the smiling arrestee and happy officer, who is seen giving the thumbs up.

The police report said Phelps was initially pulled over on Thursday for allegedly speeding and because of an "obstructed" registration sticker.  The report said the man "admitted to smoking marijuana prior to driving" and was determined to be under the influence by a "Certified Drug Recognition Expert."
"During the testing process, the defendant requested to take a SnapChat selfie with me to which I happily obliged," officer Hektoen wrote in the report. "He said he captioned the photo using emoji icons showing a police car, next to a passenger car, next to a tow truck. "
Phelps is scheduled to appear August 17 in court to face the charge. He is currently free on bond.
